U-space for UAM

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - Uspace4UAM (U-space for UAM)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2022-01-01 al 2022-12-31

The project’s overall mission is to prepare safe introduction of UAM, including flying taxis and drones operating at low and very low levels in suburban and urban areas. Building on early-movers experience, the project aimed to deliver insight and solutions that are sustainable from a societal (safety, environment, noise…) and economical (business enablers) point of view. Partners worked on maturation of technologies that support higher levels of automation and autonomy in UAM operations, and were actively engaged in standardisation and regulation aspects to enable such operations. Above all, this project contributed to internationally acceptable ConOps, to frame a safe integration of UAM in U-space and traditional air traffic.
Main achievements of thiis two years project were following:
- Consortium demonstrated operational feasibility of proposed ConOps concepts in more than 150 drone and air taxi flights/simulations in 4 different locations (Spain, Poland, Czech Republic, UK).
- Technological functions enabling higher level of automation were matured during the project and demonstrated in selected flight scenarios (Detect and Avoid, Autoland function, Contingency mangement).
- Key regulatory stakeholders as national CAA and EASA were involved in preparation of live trials.
- Social acceptance study covering voice of general public with respect to UAM utilization was conducted
- Project outcomes were also discussed in several dissemination events including project Advisory board meetings, Amsterdam Drone week, EU drone days, Airspace World.
Experiences gained in this multi-national consortium contributed to the maturation of overall UAM ConOps by identifying gaps towards more automated and ultimately autonomous UAM operations in U space airspace. Project shared the outcomes and lessons learned with relevant European and international standardisation and regulation initiatives.
