Electronic, Didactic and Innovative Platform for Learning based On Multimedia Assets

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - e-DIPLOMA (Electronic, Didactic and Innovative Platform for Learning based On Multimedia Assets)

Période du rapport: 2022-09-01 au 2023-08-31

The e-DIPLOMA project arises as a response to the situation caused by the COVID-19. The main objective of the project is to establish an innovative e-learning platform that enhances and consolidates distance education as a valuable and effective alternative to conventional learning methods. The electronic platform will incorporate cutting-edge technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and robotics. To address the social and ethical implications that may arise due to the implementation of these advanced technologies in education, 3 WPs are devoted to analyse the educational approach, the policy recommendations and the ethics concerns and the way to avoid or minimise them.
The development of the e-learning platform will be a collaborative effort involving various stakeholders in co-design and co-creation actions. Key participants include students, teachers, content creators, parents, and policymakers.

Theproject is structured into four phases: i) Audit, ii) Co-design, iii) Piloting, and iv) Uptake.
In WP2 "Focused view on European current situation of e-learning and co-creation of educational practices with emerging technologies", we conducted 8 workshops and 6 surveys in each country within the consortium, to examine the current state of e-learning in Europe and gather user opinions regarding the ethical dimensions of using innovative technologies in education. The findings were compiled into deliverable D2.2. Additionally, a research paper was presented at the MIS4TEL conference titled 'Exploring the Value and Ethical Dimensions of Disruptive Technologies for Learning and Teaching.' In addition, four hackathons/focus groups are already planned to involve stakeholders.
In WP3 "Piloting and testing of innovation procedures and technology enhancement", tasks are in their early stages. The execution of the co-design actions is scheduled to begin in September.
In WP4 "Development of training modules and e-Platform Deployment", the platform technology specification has already been completed. Deliverable 4.1 describes the structure and architecture of the innovative e-learning platform.
In WP6 "Policy Recommendations", desk research was carried out in each country of the consortium on the e-learning policies present in their respective regions. Linked deliverable D6.1 presents conclusions comparing the importance that different governments give to e-learning. Another outcome of WP6 is D6.2 “SWOT Report.”
WP7 "Data management and ethics, gender, privacy, security, and regulatory aspects", several actions were taken: a mapping of ethical and legal considerations was carried out (D7.1) an ethics plan (D7 .2), a first version with the contextualization of the different policies of each country regarding sociocultural aspects (D7.3) and a guiding document as a common declaration of the project partners with the Ethical Issues that must be verified and reviewed (D7.5). Special attention will be paid to the use of Artificial Intelligence, to implement this technology as ethically appropriate as possible, a report that evaluates the ethical risks related to AI (D7.6).
After 12 months of execution, phase i) Audit is completed at 90%. The policies in different countries have been audited, and the potential, opportunities, barriers, and risks of the selected technologies have been presented in a relevant educational conference. The project is establishing the co-design methodology. Focus Groups, Workshops, and Hackathons are being organized to involve stakeholders in the development of the most accurate educational prototypes, which will be deployed on the e-learning platform that is currently under construction.
To develop the three prototypes, the technical partners started to analyzing the current state of the art of the technologies, adapting them to educational purposes and proposing enhancement.
In this year, the Phase 1: Audit has been practically fulfilled. The main objectives are to identify the current situation of e-learning in the consortium countries in terms of policies and implementation. The ethical dimension has been analysed and an initial assessment of the use of Artificial Intelligence in the project was carried out, which is useful in identifying the changes that the rapid development of this technology is causing in the educational environment. Conclusions are the need for persistent monitoring of the AI systems and the need for continuous training of all the stakeholders involved, each on different topics, but with the aim of understanding the point of view of the other stakeholders and thus having a complete vision of the need to implement AI in an ethically relevant way. WP3 and WP4 are still in the early stages and results in terms of the development of Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence and Gamification will be presented in the next year.
One technical result that has been effectively achieved is the configuration and optimal architecture of the e-learning platform. This architecture combines cloud resources, game engines, user identification and collaborative environments to enable the e-learning process in the best possible way.
