Bridging the Migration and Urban Studies Nexus

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - BROAD-ER (Bridging the Migration and Urban Studies Nexus)

Período documentado: 2022-11-01 hasta 2025-10-31

Aligned with the strategic aim of past twinning projects, the BROAD-ER initiative focuses on developing excellence and research prominence in migration and urban studies. Its primary objective is to establish a Research Excellence Network involving Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) in Spain, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) in the Netherlands, and Koç University (KU) in Turkey. This collaboration aims to bridge research gaps and enhance Research & Innovation capacities in Turkey within the realms of migration and urban studies.
The project provides scientific and research management training to researchers, addressing key skills such as research proposal management, ethical considerations, diversity, equity and inclusion, scientific outreach, entrepreneurship, and technology transfer. This training, alongside mobility activities, aims to foster networking and internationalization at Koç University.
Through joint publications and improved ability to attract research funding, BROAD-ER aims to achieve its objectives, which include establishing a multidisciplinary research group, reinforcing research management capacity at KU, enhancing innovation capacity, and effectively disseminating project activities and results.
In essence, BROAD-ER focuses on enhancing Koç University's research capabilities by collaborating with leading international institutions in migration and urban studies.
By completing thorough background reports and meticulous gap analyses, the project is presently delving into the intricacies of migration and urban dynamics, aiming to unveil synergies among various analytical, empirical, and theoretical frameworks within these domains. Through a range of targeted trainings, workshops, and seasonal schools (summer and winter), several of which have concluded and some are ongoing, the project is actively disseminating knowledge and connecting with a wider audience, both internally and externally.
During the mid-term phase of the project, significant achievements have been attained across three main components.

Regarding training, diverse activities were conducted to bolster research capabilities at KU and foster knowledge sharing among participants, including doctoral and early career researchers.

In terms of research, the BROAD-ER Project successfully concluded its research segment, delving into processes wherein cities sought autonomy from national governments. This involved collective research, interviews, and data collection with key stakeholders. Outputs comprised reports on Urban Politics and Autonomy-building Processes, fostering connections among civil society, government, and researchers, and formulating conceptual frameworks on migration and urban governance.

Concerning mobility, while a few schemes have commenced, the full mobility aspect is slated for completion in the latter half of the project to synchronize with the amassed information and knowledge. Networking structures for mobility have already been scheduled, with ongoing efforts to leverage additional funding for mobility activities in new research domains. This initiative will facilitate exchanges with academic, industry, and government stakeholders, with fellowships supporting visits by researchers and professors from partner institutions for collaborative research.
Contribution to expected outcomes and wider impacts are scientific, economic, and societal centered:
• Reinforced Koç University (KU)’s internal strengths, deepening and sharing its knowledge.
• Set the scene for continuous knowledge exchange.
• Applied open innovation in practice.
• Bridged the East with the EU in migration and urban governance.
• Put a holistic lens on networking.
• Fused interdisciplinary international talent to migration and urban governance.
• Filled the gap at the nexus between urbanization and migration research by performing exploratory research on migration studies and city capacity building, autonomy processes, and city diplomacy.
• Increased visibility and sustainability through capacity building and well-put efforts.
• Attracted and assisted aspiring talent.
• Updated the current KU Social Science PhD program, covering cutting-edge migration and urbanization research and BROADER’s latest developments.
• Created an open and transparent recruitment process for researchers in line with ERA priorities and centered on gender equality.
• Provided cross- and interdisciplinary training of scientific excellence to KU researchers and staff.
• Merged enhanced research capacity with agile planning and development.
• Cemented open approaches to recruitment and gender equality.
• Enabled inward and outward mobility of researchers.
• Pushed the envelope in migration and urban governance science beyond research outcomes.
• Enhanced breakthrough research conducted in KU.
• Established international links with top-tier institutions and civil society – saw quantitative dissemination targets and relevant KPIs.
• Involved multiple stakeholders to maximize BROAD-ER outcomes.
