Formation d’une nouvelle cohorte de scientifiques au synchrotron de quatrième génération de la Suède

L’exploitation des interactions lumière-matière pour «voir» les propriétés et les comportements d’une large gamme de matériaux, des métaux aux tissus humains, génère de nouvelles connaissances et favorise la conception rationnelle de matériaux destinés à des applications. Les synchrotrons produisent des faisceaux de lumière d’une extrême intensité à de telles fins. Premier synchrotron de quatrième génération au monde, le MAX IV est également unique en raison des objectifs de durabilité très ambitieux qu’il s’est fixés, qui lui ont déjà valu une récompense. Fort du soutien du programme Actions Marie Skłodowska-Curie, le projet PRISMAS formera 40 scientifiques spécialistes des rayons X au niveau du doctorat pour exploiter MAX IV. La nouvelle cohorte sera prête à concrétiser certains des objectifs de durabilité les plus impérieux de la planète, tout en plaçant l’UE à l’avant-garde de la recherche mondiale dans le domaine des synchrotrons.

Objectif

The PRISMAS initiative is proposed by MAX IV, Lund Universiteit faculty, to meet a two-fold objective: (1) ensure Sweden can take the lead on educating the next generation of synchrotron experts, as the home to the world’s first 4th generation synchrotron, giving Europe significant advances compared to USA and Japan, and (2) strengthen the network surrounding Swedish academia and MAX IV with regard to synchrotron methods for interdisciplinary, intersectoral and international research.

The PRISMAS programme ambition is then to educate 40 X-ray scientists, through a completely novel and integrated selection and training process, to tackle some of world most pressing sustainability development goals and to be able to meet the challenges of the future.

The targeted impacts are: (1) to develop a new cohort of X-ray methodology ambassadors, able to fully exploit the potential of the next generation X-ray sources, ensuring the future of synchrotron technology and instrumentation is safe in the hands of well-trained and highly knowledgeable people, (2) to deliver to the scientific community novel results generated by a new generation of young scientists trained at the cutting edge of several disciplines, and able to meet some of the most important world challenges, (3) to strengthen the Swedish position in an international competition by continuing to develop X-ray methods, (4) to structure novel training principles for researchers among the PRISMAS stakeholders, and beyond.

This ambition is supported by a consortium of 9 Universities (Implementing Partners) and a network of 20 Associated Partners from academia, industry and public bodies, strongly involved and financially committed in the implementation of the programme as well as the training and supervision of PRISMAS fellows.

This programme represents a total amount of more than 16 M€ budget which 67% is covered by the consortium, enabling to accelerate the dynamic of ecosystem gathering around MAX IV.
