Multi-scale research on nano-twinned thermal barrier coatings with high strength and toughness

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - TWINCER (Multi-scale research on nano-twinned thermal barrier coatings with high strength and toughness)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2024-03-01 al 2026-02-28

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have been widely used to protect the substrate of hot components against the hot and corrosive environment. They are used particularly in the energy sector, aerospace technology, and the chemical industry. Nevertheless they are facing the paradox of conflicting competition between the strength and toughness especially under high temperature. The goal is to develop high-temperature TBCs with improved strength and toughness. This project proposes an innovative strategy for developing nano-twin ceramics and investigates their mechanical properties under high-temperature conditions with improved mechanistic understanding.

This includes the development of novel nano-twin TYaO4 ceramic materials using hierarchical structures and the investigation of the mechanical properties of shaped TBC materials using a unique high-temperature nanoindentation system up to 2000 K. Furthermore, the establishment of a multiscale simulation framework for predicting macroscopic mechanical properties and the development of a model for hardening and crack growth under the influence of twin boundaries in order to reveal the influence of nanoscale structures. Four work programs are proposed ranging from experiments, simulations to theories to realize such an ambitious plan, intervened with a careful balanced training program, dissemination and management skill development. Properly implemented, the project shall reveal for the first time the effect of hierarchical nanoscale structures on the improved mechanical properties of TYaO4 ceramics up to 2000 K, which are much needed for the development of next generations of TBCs.

The project is unfortunately not started due to visa issue from the German authority.
