Regional Economy / Travel Expectations

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - RE-TE (Regional Economy / Travel Expectations)

Berichtszeitraum: 2023-09-01 bis 2025-02-28

The assessment of the health of economies around the world has historically been based on reports prepared by multiple public and private institutions – from banks to governments. These describe how an economy has evolved in the past, but are lagging and low-resolution pictures of fast evolving systems, and are therefore hill-suited for guiding real decision-making processes under uncertainty. The solution could come from air transport and its demand, as these can provide real-time indicators of the intentions of citizens and companies to travel several months in the future; but are also linked to, and therefore describe, the evolution of the economy in general.
The objective of this project is to explore the societal and commercial value of macro-economic indicators extracted from air transport, with a special focus on the general public, large regional governments, and SMEs.
The work performed in this project has mainly been focused on two lines of activities.

From a technical perspective, we have deployed an IT infrastructure to support the creation and distribution of reports based on aeronautical data and their respective evolution. This integrated data coming from different sources (from ticket prices to actual operations), and provided the user with a web-based graphical interface to explore different indicators.

The system has further been tested in a series of use cases, involving primarily local government agencies and local companies of the tourism sector. We have further evaluated the benefits offered by a tighter integration into existing data management solutions; and analysed the challenges associated with the deployment of a complete commercial product.
The final infrastructure developed in this project has resulted of relevance to several stakeholders, and initial tests were also performed towards the integration of our system into their data management infrastructure. At the same time, several limitations have been highlighted, specifically regarding the granularity of the provided metrics: in order for instance to support a turistic market analysis, additional spatial information (e.g. country of origin of travellers) would be required.
