CELESTE has made strong and tangible progress towards establishing itself as a high-impact Centre of Excellence in advanced optics and space technologies, with substantial achievements already visible across its core strategic pillars.
During RP1, the project has successfully moved beyond the initial set-up phase and has begun to demonstrate operational capacity, scientific and technological output, industrial engagement, and a credible pathway towards long-term institutional sustainability.
A major achievement of the period has been the effective deployment of CELESTE’s operational structure and laboratories, creating the foundations required for the Centre’s long-term growth. The five specialised laboratories are now in place and active, supported by dedicated general support functions for project management, administration, IT and communication.
In parallel, CELESTE has made significant progress towards its future autonomous governance model, with the creation of the independent CELESTE Foundation now expected substantially earlier than originally foreseen. This is a strategically important development, as it will enable the Centre to move from operating within the institutional framework of IAC to a more agile and internationally competitive model with greater legal, financial, administrative and personnel autonomy.
The project has also delivered very positive early results in funding attraction, industrial engagement and market relevance. Beyond the EU grant and complementary funding framework, CELESTE laboratories have already secured a strong portfolio of contracts and competitive projects at regional, national and international level, demonstrating the relevance of its technological offer and the confidence already placed in the Centre by public and private actors. Important progress has also been achieved in relation to ecosystem building and commercial traction, with multiple contracts signed, a significant number of NDAs concluded with industrial and institutional partners, and a broad base of stakeholder engagement already underway. These results provide early evidence that CELESTE is successfully positioning itself not only as a research initiative, but as a credible innovation and technology-transfer platform with growing industrial visibility.
