Confronting Thompson’s Conjecture: A Hypercontractive Approach

Project description

Understanding algebraic groups with Boolean functions

Mathematics is essential for advancing various technologies and sectors, from architecture to computing and digital innovation. However, its complexity makes novel developments rare and challenging, despite their significant benefits. The ERC-funded GroupHype project aims to enhance the understanding of linear algebraic groups through Boolean function analysis. Specifically, it will focus on Thompson’s conjecture about conjugacy classes, a long-unsolved problem. To address this, the project will integrate expertise from multiple disciplines, exploring conjectures related to Cayley graph independence numbers, hypercontractivity in groups, and character value bounds.

Objective

This proposal concerns enhancing our understanding of linear algebraic group via methods from Boolean function analysis. In particular, it is focused on addressing Thompson's conjecture about conjugacy classes, a longstanding problem in group theory that has captivated researchers for over four decades. We bring together insights from diverse disciplines, weaving together concrete conjectures concerning character value bounds, the independence number of normal Cayley graphs, and most critically, the novel concept of hypercontractivity in groups to provide a framework for a solution to the conjecture.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
