Local structural disorder and Anharmonicity enabled low Thermal Transport and tracing Ionic Conduction in Efficient Ag2X (X: S, Se) thermoelectrics – A dual facetted study

I risultati ispireranno l’innovazione nelle tecnologie termoelettriche a temperatura ambiente.

Obiettivo

EU's ambition of achieving climate neutrality by 2050 requires multifaceted approach, with a key focus on replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy sources. In this respect, thermoelectrics (TE) offers a promising solution by converting waste heat into electricity contributing to global energy base while addressing environmental challenges through decarbonization. A major barrier in the broader implementation of TE is the need for high-performance materials.
Silver chalcogenides Ag2X (X: S, Se) have recently shown excellent TE performance near room temperature (RT: 300 K 400 K) owing to inherently low heat conduction (). Despite this, our understanding of their low and their stability in the harsh operational conditions of a TE device remains uninvestigated. These aspects pose a significant challenge in advancing Ag2X as a viable alternative for TE near RT.
LATTICE is a career development program designed for the researcher, aimed at developing structure-property relations in Ag2X to address stated fundamental and application-based aspects. To successfully achieve the goals of this interdisciplinary project, the researcher will undergo advanced research training in the host group pioneer in TEs at EUs leading University. The researcher will benefit from hosts strong expertise in studying materials structure by a wide range of experimental and theoretical methods and techniques. This opportunity will foster researchers growth in TE and materials science, positively impacting his long-term career trajectory.
If successful, the project will unravel new knowledge of heat conduction in Ag2X and evaluate stability by unique measurement setup; emulating TE device operation conditions. LATTICEs research output will benefit colleagues working on other type of energy conversion devices that employ Ag2X. New knowledge on Ag2X will attract EU-based SMEs involved in R&I to develop near RT heat-capturing TEs, progressing economy towards sustainability.
