DEVELOPMENT OF A NANOHYBRID SYSTEM BASED WEARABLE MICROFLUIDIC PHOTOELECTROCHEMICAL SENSOR FOR THE ON-DEMAND cTnI DETECTION (NANOPEC)

Objective

Development of a Nanohybrid System Based Wearable Microfluidic Photoelectrochemical Sensor for the On-Demand cTnI Detection

The Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) demands instant diagnosis, since the currently existing technologies remain invasive, expensive, time-consuming, and confined to clinical setups. The project NANOPEC proposed for the MSCA PF application hosts an innovative solution with the development of a wearable, biorecognition-free, microfluidic photoelectrochemical (PEC) saliva sensor for the ultrasensitive detection of cardiac troponin (cTnI). Fundamentally, it lies in a unique zinc oxide tetrapod-graphene quantum dot (ZnOTPD/GQD)-based nanohybrid system, while GQD will be derived sustainably from plastic waste. Embedding this into a flexible, wearable patch will enable the on-demand real-time monitoring of cTnI levels. This project relies on the following key deliverables: Development of GQD with quantum yield > 50% with photoinduced charge transfer efficiency over 85% within the nanohybrid, Fabrication of a durable, microfluidic PEC patch withstanding at least 50 cycles while keeping a stable performance, ultrasensitive detection with an expected limit of detection < 5 pg/ml, and validation of the sensor performance with artificial saliva matrices with reproducibility (expected RSD under 8%) and robustness against common interfering analytes. By interlinking nanotechnology, material science, and wearable diagnostics, NANOPEC will open up a way for a low-cost, scalable, sustainable, non-invasive, on-set diagnostic tool, which will improve clinical outcomes and reduce the global mortality rate.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
