Objective
Among the broad spectrum of green technologies, hydrogen has emerged as a particularly promising option for achieving the 'near-zero' shipping on a well-to-wake basis. While the feasibility of using hydrogen onboard is generally more straightforward than other carbon-free technologies, its marine cryogenic storage is expected to be essential to advance the onboard hydrogen operations through accurate BOR prediction and robust BOG management.
This project aims to improve researchers' knowledge of marine LH2 storage practice and to propose methods for facilitating the shipping industry' s safe and efficient adoption of hydrogen fuel for 'net-zero' green transition. Specifically, the project addresses 4 research objectives:
RO1: Analyse the influence of insulation configurations, with a focus on unintended thermal bridge effects, on the thermal resistance of marine LH2 storage system;
RO2: Develop a data-driven thermal modelling approach for real-time BOR prediction in marine LH2 storage system, incorporating dynamic sloshing and pressurised conditions at varying fuel levels;
RO3: Develop a BOR-informed decision-making framework with energy, economy, and safety-boundaried optimisation for predictive BOG management in marine LH2 storage system;
RO4: Disseminate research outputs, in the form of scientific knowledge and industry resources to researchers and industry practitioners, enabling them to evaluate and exploit them.
The report from the European MSA highlighted that marine LH2 storage is still in its infancy and remains the most challenging aspect of hydrogen-fuelled shipping. Therefore, I aim to develop systematic methodologies and supporting tools at the host institution to address the emerging gaps in LH2 storage, building on my research experience at DUT and KTH. Through this project, I will engage in a wide range of research activities, enhancing my domain knowledge, research skills, professional network, and practical experience.
