Turning scientific evidence into educational impact
While research has generated valuable knowledge on effective education practices, schools often struggle to apply research to the classroom. The EU-funded ACHIEVE4EDU project aims to bridge this divide. It focuses on helping students excel in reading, maths, and science by grounding school policy in proven social impact evidence. Instead of keeping research, policy, and classroom practice in separate silos, the project shows how to bridge them so that the best ideas are implemented. It will also launch an open-access platform to help stakeholders share best practices. Overall, the project is contributing to more inclusive learning environments that are aligned with European education priorities.
Objective
ACHIEVE4EDU aims to strengthen the effective use of Scientific Evidence of Social Impact (SESI) in education policy and practice, focusing on improving student achievement in reading, mathematics, and science during the transition from primary to secondary education. SESI is not a newly invented concept but a reorientation of the traditional evidence-based education paradigm. This redefinition aligns with current priorities emphasising demonstrable social impact, particularly improvements in student achievement replicated across diverse contexts and scientifically validated. The project addresses key gaps identified, including limited empirical evaluation of education policies and insufficient translation of scientific evidence into practice. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and participatory approaches, ACHIEVE4EDU will:
(1) generate new analyses to identify and validate SESI improving student outcomes across contexts;
(2) analyse successful SESI adoption cases on education policy and practice;
(3) co-create dialogic training processes with policymakers and practitioners to foster critical and context-sensitive appropriation of SESI;
(4) develop an open-access digital platform to host training materials, practical tools, and impactful experiences, promoting a culture of evaluation and evidence-informed decision-making;
(5) disseminate SESI to support broader uptake and policy transfer.
By leveraging mixed methods research, collaboration with educational authorities to access administrative data, and inclusive stakeholder engagement, the project will contribute to the European Education Area’s goals and the EU target of reducing low achievement among 15-year-olds. ACHIEVE4EDU will enhance education systems’ capacity to adopt effective, evidence-based practices with social impact, fostering inclusive growth, reducing inequalities, and improving educational outcomes across Europe.
