Effective Theories in high dimensional Quantum and Probabilistic Systems

Objective

It is the overall objective of my research to construct a robust framework for the derivation of effective theories in high dimensional systems, of both quantum and probabilistic nature. At the core, the framework itself is built on advanced mathematical techniques developed in the analysis of the Bose gas and heavily employs the duality between functional analytic models and probabilistic systems, which I deem a crucial element in order to address high-ranking open problems in mathematical physics. The proposal is divided into two major parts:

A. Thermal properties of quantum and classical gases: I first develop and apply novel techniques for the study of the Bose gas, in order to address the validity of Bogoliubov's approximation as an effective theory. In particular, I present a new method in the study of the hard-core quantum gases, which characterizes an underlying probability distribution in terms of a characteristic equation, settling long-standing problems in many-body quantum physics. This novel technique is subsequently employed for the study of the classical Coulomb gas, and the presented framework allows for a derivation of central limit theorems and the asymptotically sharp identification of thermalization times.

B. Polaron models and their effective description: I expand the presented framework to the study of polaron models and investigate their complex phenomena such as the effectively increased mass. As the coupling strength between particle and field increases, the number of quantized excitations grows, leading to an effective description of the field by its semi-classical equations. This proposal aims at verifying the semi-classical approximation and generalizing the Landau-Pekar-Spohn conjecture for models with significant ultraviolet and infrared singularities. In order to execute this ambitious program, I will combine methods and results from the functional analytic side and functional integration.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
