Novel Therapeutic Agents for the Treatment of Tuberculosis

Obiettivo

The overall objective of this project is to use synthetic organic chemistry to develop novel carbohydrate-based therapeutic agents for the treatment of tuberculosis (TB). The spread of tuberculosis is a massive global problem and serious measures need to be taken immediately to deal with the disease. The TB problem is of particular importance to the EU as over a quarter of a million TB cases per year occur in Eastern Europe alone. Driven by the worrying threat to health presented by the spread of TB, ther e is an urgent need to develop novel therapeutic agents that will have a unique mode of action in order to combat multi-drug resistance. Training needs to be provided for the "next generation" of researchers in this disease area, and this is of utmost imp ortance to the EU if we are to stay competitive in this area of research on a global scale. The overall scientific objective of this project is to develop novel carbohydrate-derived therapeutic agents for the treatment of tuberculosis (TB) based upon a mech anistic knowledge of Mycobacteria tuberculosis cell wall biosynthesis. The strategic objective is to develop cutting edge tuberculosis therapy research within the European Research Area and cultivate a world-class research environment for the training of the next generation of European scientists. The applicant is an outstanding Hungarian female scientist and this fellowship would allow her to travel to the UK for advanced training and help transfer any new knowledge back to Hungary at the end of the projec t, and develop future collaborations in this area.
