APPLICATION AND EVALUATION OF A NOVEL ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM BASED ON INTELLIGENT CONTROL ALGORITHMS AND UTILISING INNOVATIVE SENSOR TECHNOLOGY

Obiettivo

AENEAS is a collaborative project between Ricardo, Daimler-Benz and Kistler. Its aim is to assimilate Cylinder Pressure based Engine Management System (CPEMS) technology in order to obtain substantial improvements in cost, efficiency, comfort, emissions and reliability compared to conventional systems.Conventional Engine Management Systems (EMS) are primarily parameter based systems in which there is no underlying model to describe the behaviour of the engine. Such systems therefore require many parameters to control the engine under steady-state, transient fuelling and varying ambient conditions. The introduction of Model-Based control in order to overcome this problem has been hindered mainly by the lack of inexpensive sensing devices which can closely monitor the engine's performance. In particular, the measurement of cylinder pressure which would give valuable information on the engine's performance, has been very expensive due to the harsh environment of the combustion chamber. In recent years, attention has focused upon the development of inexpensive cylinder pressure sensors in order to realise a system more appropriate for the application of Model-Based control. This project is based on the results of advanced R&D work carried out by Daimler-Benz and Kistler on the application of Silicon Carbide on Insulator (SiCOI) and Silicon On Insulator (SOI) technologies for such devices. These material systems have been shown to operate under harsh combustion environments and have the potential for a cost effective solution to the development of a CPEMS.The first objective of the project is to demonstrate benefits which are expected to include :- Better controlled combustion giving lower emissions, faster light-off and smoother running- Improved sensing leading to a reduced number of sensors and faster sensing- Reduced number of engine maps- Improved adaptive capabilities- More suitable for Model-Based control hence reduced calibration effort and greater scope for novel control methods- Improved On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) The second objective is the widespread diffusion of this technology to European companies. This would include publications, arranging demonstration workshops and establishing production networks. The project partners will carry out the following main activities: - Establish the cylinder pressure sensor and overall system specifications- Evaluate the sensor in terms of robustness, stability, lifetime, cost, etc.- Configure control algorithms for implementation into an ECU- Test CPEMS on a test-bed and a demonstration vehicle - Disseminate the results of the project to European companies.
