Objective
On one hand, the Computer Animation community focuses on the Virtual Human model and control. Generic methods for interacting with the digital actors are available, allowing an animator to drive them with a set of programmable actions. On the other hand, t he Robotics community has developed techniques and algorithms to increase the autonomy of robots. Particularly, the community is at the origin of the motion planning methods, and more specifically of those based on the Probabilistic Roadmaps Method. Recent ly, combinations of motion planning techniques and computer animation techniques appeared in the related literature, providing a solution for planning the motion of virtual actors. First results are promising but the abilities of these solutions is yet lim ited. The main objective of the RAGA project is to extend the functionalities of such solutions. Particularly, one goal of the proposal is to allow the automatic synthesis of animations in which the virtual actors is achieving simultaneously several tasks, such as reaching and grasping an object of the environment while walking. Of course, the motion of the actor must also satisfy the constraints related to the presence of obstacles of the environment possibly cluttered. I spent a PhD thesis in the Robotics community on the problem of the locomotion planning of virtual actors in cluttered environments. The RAGA project is an opportunity to leverage my Robotics know-how and foster its potential through mastering the unique Computer Animation techniques (and d evices) developed at the Virtual Reality Laboratory of the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland). The realisation of the project should open a clear perspective in this research direction, in which I intend to pursue my career as an independent researcher.
