'Meeting of Minds. European Citizens' Deliberation on Brain Science'

Obiettivo

A Meeting of Minds across Europe. European Citizens' Deliberation on Brain Science Brain science is a key technology of our times. The rapid headway being made in this field will enable us, to an unprecedented degree, to improve the ways in which our bra ins function. Brain science will also change the way we see ourselves, for the brain has become the leading metaphor of what being human entails. For this reason, a partner consortium of technology assessment bodies, science museums, academic institution s and public foundations from 9 European countries is launching a 'Citizen's Deliberation on Brain Science'. What do European citizens believe constitutes an improvement of the brain? How do they perceive their own image as human beings? How will new fi ndings in brain science affect that perception? The citizens will be charged with assessing both research developments and ethical and socio-political aspects of issues at stake in the field of brain science and with delivering a set of recommendations re levant to policy-makers and the wider scientific and research communities. The initiative will help to set the agenda on a wider political debate by linking specific issues of concern or interest to the public to a larger debate on brain science. The ass essment by European citizens of what is possible compared to what is desirable regarding issues at stake in the field of brain science will help to increase legitimacy by responding to EU calls for greater public involvement in the discussion of future res earch, technological decision-making and governance.
