Obiettivo
Ad- hoc participatory events are held by science museums and other institutions to stimulate the involvement of citizens in scientific debates and decisions. We believe that it is also crucial to create a more widespread fabric of participation, disseminating the culture of science/society dialogue in all informal learning contexts and activities of popularisation of science. Animators (explainers, educators, demonstrators or pilots) represent a very large group of players in the science/society dialogue. They are essential in museums, temporary exhibitions, science festivals and institutional activities such as open days, because they are the main interface between the container-institution (museums, research centres, universities) and its public, and thus often the only reliable source of feedback. They are in most cases undergraduate or PhD students in scientific disciplines, and thus will-be scientists. Through a two-years activity leading to a School of science communication, this project develops and tests methodologies for training Animators for a most effective science/society dialogue.
The project is not intended to replace normal training, but to devise theoretical knowledge, evaluation techniques and new tools to enable Animators:
1. to increase the dialogue between science and society in a day after day action
2. to be involved in the evaluation practices of their institutions
3. to act as ambassadors of public needs and concerns in the scientific institution where in many cases they will continue their career
4. to be aware of sprit and practice of new participatory procedures.
The first year is dedicated to planning and testing the scheme, involving a small group of Animators and exchanges of best practices among institutions; in the second year a School will be organized for 50 Animators from all over Europe. Special attention will be dedicated to the new member states. Dissemination actions will be organized and an e-book published.
