Robot navigation in the oral cavity of humans

Ziel

Dental implantology is a dynamic growing method for tooth replacement, and because of the large number of operations, in Germany alone about 400.000 dental implants per year are implanted, improvements of the surgery methods and methods are searched. These improvements will have a large positive impact on costs and quality of live of many patients. The SME TatraMed s.r.o. located in the new EU member Slovakia in the city of Bratislava is making surgery planning and medical robot control software.

The host, the University Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany, with one of the oldest and most famous universities in Europe, is developing new surgery methods for dental implantation, utilizing Computer Aided Surgery and modern implant technology. In the joint project ORAL ROBOT an assisting surgery robot prototype system for dental implantology is being developed and will be tested. The Goal is, to help the surgeon to place implants more accurate and to operate faster and with less side effects.

The surgeons and scientists of the host will gain higher awareness of risks and potentials of modern software and robot systems, and the professional surgery planning software of TatraMed will become base for the hosts future research projects and for advanced patient treatment. TatraMed will gain knowledge about the in Slovakia and the other new member states of the EU not well known technique of dental implantation, and so gain know how for new products and access to new markets.

The project team forms three joint work groups to develop the ORAL ROBOT, each work group consisting of staff of both organisations. These work groups are the main instrument for transfer of knowledge and to advance the project. The work group members are being exchanged to the other partners location. Scientific workshops, publications and patents are made during the project.
