Un implant cornéen artificiel biomimétique
La cornée est la partie antérieure transparente de l’œil. Si elle est endommagée par une maladie, une infection ou une blessure, elle peut affecter la vision, voire entraîner une cécité. La pénurie mondiale de greffons cornéens rend urgent le développement de solutions alternatives. Le projet RESEE, financé par le CEI, entend accélérer la fabrication d’un implant biomimétique entièrement synthétique pour traiter la cécité cornéenne. Cet implant, appelé CorNeat KPro, offre une solution thérapeutique à vie dans la mesure où il s’intègre aux tissus environnants, favorisant une guérison plus rapide. Sa nature artificielle ne nécessite pas de matériau donneur, il est moins coûteux que les implants conventionnels, et il devrait soulager la souffrance et le handicap des personnes atteintes de maladies de la cornée. RESEE soutiendra l’évaluation clinique du CorNeat KPro et contribuera à la commercialisation du dispositif.
Objectif
The CorNeat KPro is a patent pending fully artificial cornea (no donor required) which provides a life-long solution for corneal blindness, pathology, and injury. Its novel approach, technology and surgical procedure bio-mechanically integrate artificial optics within resident ocular tissue. The CorNeat KPro wide aperture acrylic lens, identical in optical quality to the native non-astigmatic cornea, is surrounded by a non-degradable synthetic polymer skirt-like scaffold that mimics the native Extra-Cellular-Matrix and stimulates cellular growth and infiltration. The CorNeat KPro integrates underneath the conjunctiva, a site rich with fibroblasts, which heals vigorously. As a result, the CorNeat KPro skirt assimilates within the eyewall tissue providing a no follow-up life-long solution. CorNeat KPro and its implant procedure is 50% cheaper than traditional corneal implant hence an affordable remedy for millions of people with cornea-related visual impairments.
