Project description
A constructing solution from agricultural bioproducts
The construction of digesters for biogas plants typically involves using expensive steel or concrete, which also has a negative environmental impact. However, the EU has recently made changes to directives regarding biogas production incentives, and promoting simpler, more innovative, and cost-efficient alternatives. One such alternative is the eco-friendly solution of mechanically stabilised earth (MSE). The EU-funded Alvus project aims to develop, validate, and commercialise this disruptive innovation. Specifically, it will result in a 55 % reduction in CAPEX compared to traditional concrete digesters. It also reduces the environmental impact by lowering CO2 emissions by up to 85 %. This solution enables better integration of the plant within the agricultural landscape and boasts easy construction processes.
Objective
Nowadays, the construction of digesters for biogas plants is made of steel or concrete, which is highly expensive and not eco-friendly. Recent changes on EU directives on lowering incentives for biogas production have excluded sophisticated solutions, promoting the choice of simple, innovative and cost-efficient solutions. Alvus proposes a new construction philosophy for the digesters based on the eco-friendly solution of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE). Our solution provides the following advantages: (i) Realization of larger volumes, at a drastically reduced cost (55% CAPEX savings compared to traditional concrete digesters); (ii) Lower CO2 emissions (up to 85%), reduced environmental impact and better incorporation of the plant in the agricultural landscape; and (iii) Easy and quick construction. Thanks to this EIC project, Alvus will be able to develop, validate and commercialize a disruptive innovation, revolutionizing the entire biomethane market.
