Research Training in functional Genomics and molecular Medicine

Obiettivo

Medicine will be revolutionized by the introduction of novel therapeutics that targets the underlying molecular and genetic mechanisms of disease. Targeting of defined genes using functional genomics has been proven to be particularly useful since loss of expression mutants reveal essential functions of molecules in normal physiology and the pathogenesis of multiple diseases. IMBA, a new Centre of Excellence founded by the Austrian Academy of Sciences, will create a new PhD programme, which will operate in collaboration with the University of Vienna/IMP international PhD programme.

A primary goal of the proposed IMBA PhD project is to train early stage researchers in the applications of functional genomics to understand the pathogenesis of human diseases and t o generate genetic animal models for cancer and cardiovascular diseases. The multidisciplinary training programme at IMBA will expose early stage researchers to state-of-the-art technologies in functional genetics ranging from work in different genetic mod el organisms, the biochemical elucidation of novel disease pathways, to innovative in vivo imaging of biological processes.

This training will position early stage PhD students to become productive and independent scientists in Europe. Our programme is designed to become a European Centre of Excellence in basic research and an international training centre for PhD students in post genomic research. Research training in excellent laboratory environments will be complemented by lecture courses covering modern biomedical methodology, scientific career opportunities and latest developments in biomedical research and development of presentation skills. Identification of new disease genes will also allow us to promote biotechnology industry in Europe via the set-up of small start-up companies.

Students will therefore be exposed to a biotechnology oriented academic environment. The project will strongly contribute to a European critical mass of knowledge and expertise.
