Cooperation in research and training for European excellence in the Neurosciences

Ziel

CORTEX ('Cooperation in Research and Training for European Excellence in the Neurosciences') aims at overcoming European fragmentation in Neuroscience training and research. Neuroscience research is inherently multidisciplinary and international. The Neuro sciences in academia and industry have a steadily increasing demand for highly trained scientists and clinicians. CORTEX brings together eight leading European neuroscience graduate programs, located in Berlin, Bochum, Helsinki, London, Oslo, Prague, Stockholm and Zurich. These programs will pool their expertise and resources to set up an EST that will produce young neuroscientists (1-2/program = 14) who are experts in their field yet able to look beyond the narrowly defined borders of that expertise, who a re highly qualified for a career both in academia and in industry and who have developed a truly European identity.

CORTEX scientists and students are unravelling the basic mechanisms of damage of common brain disorders, and will study development of the C NS to harness the ability of the CNS to adapt when challenged. Thus, CORTEX associated research will help prepare Europe to face some of the most serious public health challenges related to an aging population.

CORTEX training activities aim at three aspects of training:
1) scientific,
2) complementary skills and
3) personal development.

The training is based on measures already proven to work in the participating graduate schools and it introduces extensive on-line training support to link the participating graduate schools as well as the PhD students, and to facilitate the transfer of knowledge independent of location. CORTEX fellows will be optimally prepared for and guided into European career tracks in the field of neuroscience.
