PROMENVIR provides an innovative way to account for uncertainty in mechanical designs using high performance parallel computing. The reliability of structural designs can thus be quantified and improved. This powerful and flexible solution runs on existing commercial platforms networked across geographically remote locations. Parallel operation is supported over both local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs) comprising super-computers and/or workstations. PROMENVIR is a modular solution with interactive graphical interfaces. The advanced Monte Carlo sampling modules form the computational kernel of the system, while the problem definition module provides the main user interface, where the parameters of the problem are defined quickly and efficiently. The results are displayed graphically through the statistical processing module after the analysis has been completed. Alternatively, the evolution of the Monte Carlo analysis can be monitored in real time. The system is highly interactive and offers a host of statistical functions for the user to view the results.
PROMWNVIR, the probabilistic mechanical design environment, is an advanced meta computing tool for performing stochastic analysis of generic physical systems. Stochastic analysis, whether applied to structural mechanics or computational fluid mechanics, is a technique which enables one to take into account the scatter that is normally present in nearly all the data managed by engineers. The tool is based on modern Monte Carlo techniques. The environment established and managed by PROMENVIR is either a LAN or WAN of UNIX computers. The system has been proven in the following configurations: CRAYT3E 512 CPUs, crash analysis in collaboration with BMW; SGI ORIGIN 2000, 64 CPUs, satellite dynamics in collaboration with SGI; LAN of 10 HP workstations, power turbine analysis in collaboration with ABB; LAN of 6 IBM workstations, frequency analysis in collaboration with Porsche; multi-national WAN of 102 SGI workstations located in 4 countries and 7 cities, multi-body simulation by CEIT. PROMENVIR is most probably the first European meta-computing tool dedicated exclusively to computational stochastic mechanics with Monte Carlo techniques. The system has already sold and has committed order from various industries. The tool delivers the following advantages to the engineer: much more engineering insight than a deterministic analysis can deliver; evaluation of the probability of failure of a system; detection of important input/output parameters of a problem; global optimization; global sensitivity; most probable response (ideal for test prediction). The tool may be applied to any problem (linear, non-linear, static, dynamic, etc) and interfaces immediately with any solver.
