Image processing for automatic cartographic tools

Obiettivo

The aim of the project is a major improvement in the automatic extraction and grouping of features into putative buildings. The tools will be honed for applications to European urban environments, using commercially acquired images. To this end the project will extend existing capabilities in three ways: first, the range of buildings modelled will be substantially larger than that currently dealt with in the literature --- in particular, we intend to move away from simple house models (shoe-box shape, flat rectangular roof, etc.) to more complex building types; second, it will not be assumed that buildings are isolated (as in rural or suburban scenes) rather that the scene is urban, and this fact will be exploited in the algorithms; third, images can be acquired from the nadir positions typical in commercial flights, as opposed to the oblique views of reconnaissance flight patterns.

The central theme of the Impact project is the development of powerful tools for cartographic applications. In particular, image processing methods will be developed that delineate and detect man-made structures - mainly buildings - in aerial imagery. The main emphasis will be on digital urban mapping.

The tools will allow semi-automation of cartographic data generation, greatly reducing the requirement for expensive manual labour. Two particular applications are envisaged:

- Assistance in the determination of the optimal position and network configuration of (GSM) antennas,
- The generation of building inventories, mainly for the regular updating and checking of land registers.

Both applications require rather precise three-dimensional information about the building structures. Moreover, the need for the data is pressing and they are required for hundreds if not thousands of towns and cities throughout Europe. Lowering the processing time and cost is crucial for opening these and other markets for cartographic products.

The techniques that Impact will employ draw on expertise gathered by the partners in the areas of photogrammetry and computer vision. The industrial partner needs the results obtained to be put to practical use.

State-of-the-art results in feature extraction, stereo matching, grouping, three-dimensional reconstruction, and object recognition will be combined. The project will tie in with important developments such as the by now predominant use of colour aerial images, the potential for integrating more than two views, the availability of invariants to selectively probe for specific geometric configurations, feature grouping guided by uncertainty management and incidence based reasoning, and the exploitation of knowledge that is already available in the form of maps, orthophotos, and other sources.
