Efficient and clean combustion experts training

Obiettivo

The control of combustion in terms of burner stability, fuel consumption reduction and pollutants emission requires a detailed understanding of the physical phenomena involved. Combustion is a highly non-linear and complex process in which chemistry, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, radiation and phase change are deeply coupled. First steps in combustion knowledge were obtained experimentally. Today the level of detail that is needed to meet industrial quality criteria and that drives research, requires new tools of investigation.

The potential of numerical simulation has been recently significantly amplified by the application of Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) to two-phase flow combustion. By allowing the study of unsteady phenomena, these two techniques constitute a breakthrough in combustion knowledge. This is why the host institution has made DNS and LES development its top priority. The specific research training area proposed in the present project is the development and use of these tools for the prediction of piston engines and gas turbines combustion chambers. It is based on the three different and complementary types of knowledge needed for this task: theoretical, experimental and numerical.

The project therefore includes research and training on fundamentals of turbulent combustion and two-phase flows, experimental techniques and observation as well as computation of both academic and industrial configurations.
