Obiettivo
GREENTRIP addresses the creation of integrated decision-support systems for dynamic and optimised transportation logistics for European manufacturing industries, both at the organisational and operational levels. The objective of the project is to improve the overall logistics performance in companies and virtual enterprises through an optimised and dynamic coordination of transportation activities.
Virtual enterprises in manufacturing consisting of suppliers, manufacturers, customers, and transportation service providers have to coordinate distributed activities across the supply chain. Optimisation of the distribution network and a high level of coordination should be as efficient as possible. Transportation is arguably the function within the logistics chain which holds the largest potential for improvements in coordination with advanced information technology. Additional improvements will be achieved through the integration of transportation management decision-support systems in a total logistics information infrastructure. The definition and optimisation of the distribution network and the transport management are complex, dynamic and resource consuming tasks. In industries today, these tasks (if supported at all) typically use isolated IT tools that cannot balance partially conflicting objectives, do not react to dynamics, and cannot interact with the user in a meaningful and timely way. Existing tools are inadequate or too expensive. Development of tailor-made solutions is likewise. These short comings are precisely the ones that GREENTRIP shall remedy. The GREENTRIP partners shall develop a rapidly re-configurable, generic software tool for dynamic and optimised transportation logistics in manufacturing industries. Bespoke demonstrators will be developed around cases from two industrial end user partners (a cable manufacturer and a transportation service provider). Each bespoke demonstrator will be integrated at selected sites, and will address the issues mentioned above in the context of optimisation of the distribution network and the day to day transport management, respectively. In close interaction with these developments, a generic demonstrator will be developed from an existing, successful, commercial constraint programming tool. In GREENTRIP, this tool will be enhanced with facilities to accommodate the specific modelling and functional requirements found in transportation logistics. An application modelling tool for rapid installation, and standard interfaces to provide modularity and ensure rapid deployment, will be developed and demonstrated.
Optimised transportation logistics and coordination with the remaining functions in the supply chain will permit to bring to the European manufacturing industry well known benefits such as significant reductions in lead times, improved customer service (increased on-time delivery, and more flexibility), and reduction of capital costs. In addition, there will be substantial secondary effects.
The results from GREENTRIP will be directly exploited and disseminated by the partners. They will also be exploited and disseminated in other application areas.
