Final Report Summary - ULTIMATESLAM (Instant SLAM: Ultimate Performance in Visual Localisation and Mapping)

ULTIMATESLAM aimed to push back the performance limits of real-time localisation and mapping with cameras, based around efficient algorithms for processing using standard computer hardware. The research it has supported has been at the heart of this technology's drive towards mainstream adoption in application areas including robotics, smartphone and wearable devices, augmented reality and gaming. We have achieved breakthroughs in real-time dense mapping, high performance 3D tracking, large scale consistent reconstruction and object-level mapping, all of which we have been able to showcase in live demonstrations which have made a large impact on both research and commercial technology development.
