High temperature electronics network 2

Obiettivo

HITEN 2 covers all of the above industrial sectors with the following objectives:

- co-ordination, co-operation and integration of technology development programmes within the EU;
- promotion of research for high temperature electronic devices systems operating up to 350°C;
- encouragement and integration of EU education and training programmes.

These objectives will be translated into specific and practical technological goals for the next three years:

- establishing an EU electronic network of nodes and associated nodes; (HITEN 1 had 280+);
- creating a commonly shared database on performance of high temperature electronic components and systems information;
- co-ordination of EU and national R&D and technology exploitation programmes;
- co-ordination of multidisciplinary skills including materials science, software and electronics design, electronic device manufacture and systems construction, environmental testing and evaluation of components and systems, reliability and packaging.

In terms of logistical support, HITEN 2 will significantly enhance information dissemination based upon electronic mail, industrial workshops, Thematic Interest Groups, and newsletters. HITEN 2 will use multi-disciplinary skills in data acquisition, analysis, structuring and transmission. 24 hour, on-line access will be an important new feature of HITEN 2.

The research to be disseminated includes materials science (eg bulk Si, SOS, SOI, diamond and SiC technologies), high temperature simulation software development, component design and manufacture, systems build and testing, reliability studies and long term ageing data. This strategy is critical to assist with the rapid exploitation of the technology in the EU and to the rest of the world on EU export basis.

The major industrial successes of HITEN 1 will be enhanced by continuing to implement the ten year strategy and roadmap produced with the Industrial Advisory Board (IAB). HITEN 2 is the industrially agreed mechanism via which this strategy will be achieved.

High temperature electronics (HITECS) is a critical enabling technology for EU industries including consumer, aerospace, automotive, power generation, etc., representing an EU GDP of 815 BECU, employing 12M people directly and indirectly.

The EU HITEC market is expected to be 1 BECU by 2000 and nearly 3 BECU by 2005. Primary exploitation will occur in consumer, automotive and aerospace markets; consumer and automotive markets are key to establishing quality-cost-volume baselines; aerospace and oil well logging offer high quality-low volume-high price opportunities.

Basic HITEC comprises full electronics systems operating at 200°C (84% of users' interest), probably based upon Si and, maybe, GaAs technologies and able to endure extreme environments such as 20g, lifetimes of 10,000+ hours, thermal cycling from -55°C-200°C and beyond, and many power cycles, for example 20,000+. Current technology is satisfactory up to 175°C; extension to 200°C is a major materials, components and systems challenge.

Advanced HITEC is defined as being 200°C+, often 350°C+ (12% of users' interest), and based upon wide bandgap semiconductors eg diamond and SiC. The environmental requirements are as severe as for a 200°C system. Fundamental advances in materials and process development are needed.
