One important issue of any quality system is the control of defects. ISO-9000 standards ask for a structured, formal process for the control of defects. If not properly supported by computers, this process must be supported by paper forms, and normally it will become an overhead, increasing delays and bureaucratic work, and contributing to rejection of the quality system from the involved people. The result achieved shows how an adequate computer support tool, based on Workflow technology, for software defect management yields tangible benefits in terms of quick response to defect reports, better information about software defects, less effort devoted to defect management, and improved compliance to quality standards. The main advantage experienced is the faster flow of information, avoiding the need to move and organize paper forms. Additionally, the tool organizes the information about defects, offers some metrics and different views of the data, and presents the information that each person needs at any time, including historical files about defects. Benefits from the business point of view come from decreasing the costs of maintaining a formal defect control process, and higher awareness towards quality from the involved people, resulting in better performance of the quality system.
