Obiettivo
This Incoming International Fellowships (IIF) proposal aims at the development of innovative multifunctional catalytic systems in the fields of environmental catalysis and air pollution abatement processes. These systems will take advantage of the practical use of a recently-discovered phenomenon, the Electrochemical Promotion of Catalysis (EPOC).
When using EPOC, applying very small electric currents or potentials to a catalyst-support structure may allow an increase of catalytic reaction rate by some orders of magnitude. Such a technique allows to reversibly change catalytic activity and/or selectivity by modifying electronic properties of the catalyst surface. Moreover, it is now granted that EPOC may allow a better understanding of "classical" catalytic phenomena, such as strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) and then EPOC has the potential to help for the design of improved catalysts used in the near future.
The objectives are to obtain more powerful catalysts at a lower cost, more particularly b y lowering the amounts of precious metals such as Pt, Pd and Ir, which are very expensive and hard to recycle. Promoted catalysts are also able to work at lower temperatures and then to cut off in energy expenses. The Chinese researcher proposed for this I IF Action is a young (28 yrs) promising fellow with a strong background in catalysis, much experimental skill and a very good scientific production if we consider is young career.
He fits very well to the scientific project. Moreover, the likelihood that this Action allows him to gain a formal position when back in China is high. This Action will also be a springboard for a new collaboration between Dalian University and the host laboratory.
