This proposal includes a two-year stay at SLAC under the supervision of Prof. S. Brodsky and a subsequent stay at the University of Wales, where the scientist in charge will be Dr. S. Dalley. Both are leading experts in quantum field theories on the light -cone. Light-cone quantization provides an elegant and promising method for solving the outstanding problems in quantum field theories like e.g. bound states and phase transitions in QCD.
An approach to finite temperature field theory on the light-cone was developed by F. Lenz and the researcher and is based on the correspondence between relativistic field theories at finite temperature and finite extension. In the outgoing phase the researcher will start her investigation of finite temperature field theory on the light-cone with a study of screening effects in Abelian QED plasmas and the quark gluon plasma. Afterwards the researcher will go on studying non-perturbative issues such as the computation of parton distributions at finite temperature. In the ret urn phase, her skills acquired and new insights into finite temperature field theory on the light-cone, gained during the outgoing phase shall be applied in the context of numerical calculations in finite temperature field theories on a transverse lattice. The existing supposition that a light-cone lattice might be applicable at low temperature and large density will be investigated. The verification of this possibility would offer the opportunity to study the whole phase diagram of QCD numerically.
The phase structure of QCD is investigated in heavy ion collisions performed at RHIC (later at CERN and GSI). The researcher will enhance her diversity in the field and adopt important complementary and specialist skills during the fellowship to develop an independent research career. There exist only few experts in light-cone field theory in Europe; this project would therefore enhance the diversity and scientific excellence in the European research area.
