Parenting, academic achievement and health among children of Turkish immigrants

Objectif

The goal of the research is to determine the parental and acculturation related predictors of Turkish immigrant adolescent's academic performance and psychological health. Turkish immigrants and their families constitute one of the largest immigrant populations in Europe and their disadvantageous status seems to be reproduced across generations. Given that academic underachievement is common among Turkish minority youth contributing to the cycle of lower status of immigrants the first question of the research asks what the adaptive and nonadaptive parental dynamics for academic motivation and achievement among minority youth are. Because acculturation process can be especially stressful for minority adolescents the other key question is related to the parental predictors of psychological health in adolescence. The project combines parenting and acculturation perspectives by investigating the value transmission process in relation to parenting styles and child outcomes. A causal model was proposed to test the main hypotheses of the research. Overall the project includes (1) the analysis of the research dataset in the outgoing host institution in the USA and the researcher's previous data; (2) the conduction of a new study on Turkish immigrant and native families in Western Europe. The project is relevant to the objectives of the Marie Curie OIF and the Specific Programme 'Integrating and Strenghtening the European Reseach Areas Priority 7 : Citizens and Governance in a knowledge based society (2004-2006). More specifically, it addresses the Research area 7: New forms of citizenschip and cultural identities: subareas 7.1.1; 7.1.2 and 7.2.1 respectively. It is also relevant to Research area 8: Actions to promote the European Research Area in the social sciences and humanities and their contributions to the knowledge based society in Europe.
