New multimedia services using analysis synthesis 3d

Obiettivo

The objective of the Nemesis project is to reduce the post-production cost of high-image-content applications and publications, while maintaining the quality of images and opening the way for greater creativity in the post-production visual environment. To that end, Nemesis proposes to define image analysis and synthesis tools to support the ability to generate high-interest visual objects from the sequences of natural images typically handled during video post production. Such tools can be used to aid existing video production techniques, and can also lead to the development of more efficient file compression schemes for storing and transferring large quantities of images.

In the context of the present-day Information Society, Europe is expected to support the development of more effective tools to help the information industry produce high-content applications and publications more easily and at reduced cost. Existing post-production visual facilities rely heavily on software tools to manipulate images, despite the growing size and complexity of graphics files, digital images and visual databases. At the same time, growing consumer demand for more sophisticated visual content such as artificial environments and virtual reality is placing more and more pressure on existing production tools.

Reducing the cost of post-production opens up the way to new and more cost-effective applications with features such as virtual views and interactive environments. Such applications can include digital video effects (DVE) generators (object-oriented DVE production for film and video), new types of viewing (augmented reality broadcasts for sports events, spectacles or advanced video surveillance), navigation on DVD, advanced interactive TV, multimedia indexing of databases, etc.

The project will include definition of user requirements and specifications. In the initial study the results obtained from using leading-edge techniques in image processing and image sequences will be submitted to potential end-users. Their feedback will then be used to derive the specifications of the tools needed, and a set of image processing algorithms able to extract components from static and moving images will be defined.

After technical feasibility studies, Nemesis will start with a number of specially-selected image manipulation tools for incorporation into an application "toolbox" as used in typical video post-production applications. Existing image manipulation applications will then be evaluated for their suitability as vehicles for both the new enhanced toolbox and a set of corresponding object-oriented features for image manipulation.

Finally, the project will clarify how the final product can relate to current international or de facto standards such as MPEG-2 (existing studio equipment), MPEG-4 (an ongoing standard close to the proposed techniques and features of Nemesis), MHEG (interactive links with video) and VRML (3D description format). Investigation will also be carried out into other potential applications for Nemesis techniques.
