Mechanical behaviour of nanocrystalline metals and alloys

Ziel

The interest in the development, study and possible applications of nocrystalline materials is due to their high strength, dumping and promising superplastic properties. The physical and microstructural length scales exert a strong influence on the plasti c deformation behaviour of materials, as a consequence of the coupling between the fundamental length scale of the physical phenomena involved and the structural dimensions of the material.Recent developments in nanoindentation techniques allow to investig ate the deformation behaviour of materials at the nanoscale, in particular the transition from elastic to plastic deformation and the early stages of plastic deformation. The proposed project is aimed to study the mechanical behaviour of the selected nanoc rystalline metals and alloys through nanoscale experiments via nanoindentation, atomic force microscopy, and other techniques to probe mechanically the elastic stability of crystals at subnanometer displacements and large local contact strains. The propose d project is aimed to investigate the effects of cyclic loading on the fatigue resistance of nanocrystalline metals and alloys in particular on Ni and Al-based materials. A particular objective of the experimental work will be to investigate whether the gr ain refinement results on one hand in an enhancement in the fatigue endurance limit and on the other hand in an increase in the rates of fatigue crack propagation. In particular, the effect of grain size of nanocrystalline metals and alloys on the stress-l ife diagram will be evaluated in both regimes of high cycle and low cycle stress-controlled fatigue loading. The research will be aimed to the understanding of the role of microstructures on the crack growth drivingforce parameters, relating the mechanical properties to microstructural variables such as grain size, precipitates and stacking fault energy
