Multimedia action groups planning information for Europe

Obiettivo

The objective of the MAGPIE project, an Accompanying Action, is to provide current and potential developers, suppliers and users of multimedia technologies, systems and applications with the information they need about the structure, trends and future evolution of the European multimedia industry and marketplace, in order to help them plan the evolution of their business.

The aim is to capture existing knowledge about the way the sector has developed to date, and to validate that knowledge across a broad spectrum of interests. The timescale of the proposed action is limited to twelve months, in order to yield results during a critical period in the development of the multimedia sector.

The action will not attempt to duplicate the kind of comprehensive quantitative market survey readily available through commercial analysts. Instead, it will concentrate on providing the information 'building blocks' that will allow users of the study results to enhance their own market intelligence. National Special Interest Groups will provide a platform for developing that intelligence through collaboration and dialogue between representatives from all parts of the industry.

The areas selected for study are:
- electronic publishing - the ability to use multimedia technologies for the commercial exploitation of information resources.
- distribution of multimedia products - the mechanisms by which electronic information products can be distributed in their various markets.
- online transactions - the opportunities that exist for implementing new methods of charging for information products.
- emerging consumer applications - the factors that will create new markets for electronic information products in the consumer/home sector.
- legal frameworks - the existing and emerging legal structures within which commerce in electronic information will be conducted.

MAGPIE will deliver five trans-national studies conducted by the seven European Multimedia Special Interest Groups who are founder-members of the MAGNET Working Group, in conjunction with colleagues from Finland, Germany and Luxembourg. The study areas are those which provide the most significant opportunities (and threats) to the emerging multimedia content industry.

In each study area, the goals are to:
- understand the boundaries, limitations and interfaces with other areas.
- develop reference models explaining how the area is configured and operates.
- analyse the implications of the convergence of technologies/markets.
- identify milestones and catalysts for evolution/progress in the area.
- elicit and document regional differences in environment, timescales or attitudes.
- emphasise strategically significant similarities between regions and the business opportunities they create.
