Software architectures for ship product data integration and exchange

Obiettivo

In order for the European marine industry to retain and increase its market share, it must take advantage of the possibilities afforded for information handling technologies and methods, which are becoming available.

In order to facilitate this, the objective of SEASPRITE will be to create, implement, test and evaluate an architecture to enable the management, monitoring and transfer of ship hull data throughout the ship lifecycle; from tendering, initial conceptual design through model basin tests, plan appraisal, stability and loading analysis, detailed design, production, operation and repair. The data to be managed will include the hull definition, steel structure, internal arrangements and compartmentalisation, space usage, loading, and hull structural survey results. This product data will be supported by data representing work flow, quality and project information. SEASPRITE will demonstrate its application in a number of business scenarios.

The architecture supporting the integrated engineering management systems will ensure that not only is data exchanged, but that there is real management of the data in the context of business usage. The data will be encapsulated at the highest level, whether this be as a ship or project, having the effect that the lifecycle management will require the roll-on of a single high level entity rather than a collection of disparate data items.

In order to provide an efficient implementation the underlying requirement is the development of a complete ship product model to act as the basis for a Data Exchange and Management (DEM) architecture.

SEASPRITE is an end-user project, driven by the need for the European maritime industry to make maximum utilisation of the information handling capabilities of Information Technology and communication systems that exist today. Specifically there is the necessity to be able to migrate data through from phase to phase ensuring consistent re-use throughout the life cycle by all companies requiring access to the data. This will enable the industry to support co-operative working, concurrent engineering and decision support.

There is considerable experience in the consortium in the field of data exchange standardisation and concept proven within ESPRIT projects such as NEUTRABAS (EP2010), MARITIME (EP6041), the German National project Itis, and the industry sponsored project, ShipSTEP. It is the aim of SEASPRITE to now progress this technology to create application frames in order to fulfil the business needs of European companies to increase their competitive position by reducing time of ship design through to operation, and by further reducing lead times due to data handling in the operational stage of the life cycle.
