Labour relationships in the knowledge-based society

Obiettivo

My research program for the two forthcoming years will further contribute to elucidate the impact of information and communication technologies (ICT) on the economic system. Specifically, I would like to throw new light on the ongoing debate on whether new technologies have fostered or not a revolution comparable to those promoted by the use of the steam engine or the electricity.

My research project will cover two main aspects:
1- Determining the role of new technologies as a factor explaining the economic stylised facts observed in European countries over the past 25 years. To develop this research I plan to work with a general equilibrium model inspired in the Real Business Cycle tradition. This theoretical framework will have a representative firm, are presentative household, search frictions in the labour market and endogenous technological progress. The main novelty of my approach consists of introducing the amount of time devoted to education as a decision variable of the household. The objective is to show that biased technological progress has stimulated the demand for high-skilled workers and this has induced households to increase their educational level.
2- Analysing how new technologies are modifying labour relationships inside firms and wage inequalities. This line of research includes a theoretical part and an empirical part. On the theoretical side I plan to develop an endogenous job destruction model capturing the effects that the evolution from tayloristic organizational systems (where each worker only implements one task) to holistic organizational systems (where each worker implements several tasks) has on the labour flows.

On the empirical side I will analyse the impact of ICT and high performance workplace organizational practices on wage in equalities. This will allow drawing conclusions regarding the effects of these novel practices on labour productivity.
