Obiettivo
The prime objective of the project is to set up and demonstrate for both consumers and sales organisations a new and more advanced way of home shopping, using a multimedia-based online solution as the access channel. HOMESTEAD II is also intended to lower the cost of entry for merchants wishing to promote their goods or services directly into the home, by using existing consumer technology enhanced by on-line connectivity for the sales transaction.
The earlier HOMESTEAD I project demonstrated that many in the sales and marketing sectors see direct communication with home consumers as being the way forward in consumer marketing. However, the systems developed within this project were usable only in a limited trial environment and proved to be a long way from full commercial implementation, particularly where multimedia capabilities played a part in the presentation.
HOMESTEAD II aims to provide both sales organisations and consumers with the benefits of multimedia-based home shopping in the near future, by developing existing technologies to meet home shopping requirements through combining existing multimedia presentations with on-line transaction information.
The technologies involved and the benefits for operators and users will be demonstrated via a thorough market trial in order to stimulate take-up in the market. A multi-platform approach should ensure that existing electronic technologies within the home can be used for access. Ease of user access will be demonstrated by making product sales and ordering information available both by direct dial-up and via the Internet.
For the field trials it is planned to include external participants as well as specific project partners, in order to strengthen the validity of the results. These additional participants, usually selling organisations, will be identified during the early stages of the project. The work carried out as part of the project should eventually, subject to feedback from the market trial, result in a seamless transfer to a full commercial service.
