Obiettivo
The project aims at identifying the impact of European unification on the party systems of ten post-Communist countries: Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Romania and Bulgaria.
No comprehensive account exists of the developments induced by European integration and there is no explanation for the variance across the party systems in the region.
The present research fills this lacunae by studying the transformation of party systems along five dimensions:
- The project identifies those panels of party programs that either reflect on European integration or directly originate in the European arena. The aim is to assess the readiness of parties to position themselves within the Europe-wide debates and to alter their previous positions due to European pressure.
- With the help of survey data the project maps the structure of those attitudinal dimensions that are directly relevant for party competition and analyses their relationship to Euroscepticism.
- The research seeks to find out to what extent the coalition preferences and the unity of the parties is shaped by the preferences of EU actors and by the position of parties and voters concerning EU.
- The analysis of organisational structures is aimed at identifying structures copied from sister-parties (eg. gender quotas) and at detecting the transformation of internal hierarchies due to the growing informational asymmetry between leaders and members and due to the appearance of EU politicians within the parties.
- The project assesses the degree of issue congruence between the position of parties and the preferences of their voters on the issue of European integration and detects with the help of longitudinal data whether the parties follow the preferences of the voters or it is rather the other way around.
The results will help in foreseeing the influence of the enlargement upon the political patterns in EU and in explaining high abstention at EU elections.
