Objective
The basic idea behind the project is to make a number of terminological databases in the Nordic countries accessible under a common user interface, the Nordic Termbank Gateway, on the Internet and on CD-ROM. To some extent these databases are already available; on diskettes (e.g. Eriterm); via CD-ROM (e.g. Termdok); and on the Internet (e.g. test versions of the Icelandic Institute's Term Bank and TSK's termbank, TEPA). However, they are primarily accessible as in-house databases.
Therefore, an essential part of our projects is the creation of an internordic termbank based on common principles and software. A group of terminological database owners within the framework of Nordterm, will cooperate to establish and maintain such a termbank, as done in the Termdok project. Others may prefer to use their own web sites. Consequently, links will be offered from a web page common to all termbanks, the Nordic Termbank Gateway.
A common interface between the coordinate databases will be developed in close collaboration with the producer of the software for processing and retrieval. Therefore, existing software will be evaluated and an appropriate choice made as to the first task in the project.
Another important task, is to investigate all relevant terminologies available in electronic form in companies, publishing houses, universities and specialist organisations. In the concept 'terminology' we also include thesaurus information.
One or more web sites will be created and designed to house a number of web pages acting as interfaces for the facilities in the Nordterm-Net. The system will have to be open, technically and in form, in order to be compatible with other networks, e.g. it should be possible for all European languages to be entered.
One part of the project is to upgrade the terminological material. This may affect structuring, character set, and classification. All terminology material will be structured in SGML, most likely using the MARTIF standard (ISO 12200).
Based on the present version of Terminology Forum, a specific Nordic version will be developed: Nordterm Forum. Its aim is to provide information on terminology activities and results other than existing termbank services (see WP 9). The Nordterm Home Page and other adherent web page presentations will be provided in several languages.
