Studio classroom integrated homogeneous catalysis using microelectronic flow systems: introducing a new era in catalysis research

Obiettivo

Catalysis research is crucial for the development of a sustainable society and it will play a key role, jointly with other technologies, in solving global issues that deal with chemical conversions. Catalysis by itself is not a central discipline within chemistry but in this proposal catalysis is placed in the centre, rather than as a discipline composed of various other disciplines.

A paradigm shift in catalysis teaching is proposed focusing on homogeneous catalysis using metal complexes. A program will be set up involving a studio classroom of computer learning in homogeneous catalysis coupled with microelectronic flow systems to conduct experimental work. Fair to say that many elements of the program proposed are already available, but the strength lies in the new strong combination of computer and distant learning, interactive learning, the coupling with experiment with micro-electronic devices, and up-to-date methods of data-mining.

An integrated approach of experimental and theoretical study removes the gap between experiment and theory that exists in classic ways of teaching chemistry and catalysis. The use of micro-electronics and fluidics is highly attractive for both the general public and future students. Tools will be developed to give secondary school students access to the equipment and to give a better insight to chemistry and catalysis to the public.

The results of the new teaching methods, the NEW VISION on catalysis research, will be disseminated via the existing European catalysis networks, a s clearly the number of customers that can be served with one centre is very limited.
