Superfluidity in Mixtures of Fermions with Different Masses

Obiettivo

This Project will investigate theoretical problems that appear in cold-trapped gases of fermionic atoms in the statistical regime of high degeneracy. I aim to establish the phase diagram for mixtures of two types of fermionic atoms at zero temperature as a function of the densities and masses of both species. In particular I will concentrate on the different types of superfluid phase that can arise in this context.

I will begin by comparing the various proposed ground states which exist in the literature and identify which ones are favourable in which regions of parameters for the case of a uniform system (in the absence of an external potential). I will also investigate the possibility of phase separation between these phases. Next I will study the situation in the presence of an external trapping potential (either magnetic or optical) which confines the gas of atoms.

This potential induces a spatial variation of the density profile of the two types of atom and can create spatially separated regions of superfluid phases with different order parameters. Finally I will study and propose methods of detecting these phases in future experiments.
