The project addresses how to reduce the wastes that occur in manufacturing and distribution due to poor control of design and manufacturing information. These wastes are due to rectification, remake, redistribution of products due to them being manufactured incorrectly, or sent to customers as part deliveries or uncompleted orders. Generally small and medium sized enterprises (SME) grow from extremely small companies in which their business processes tend to be formulated on a loose network of information. As the business grows this information becomes more formally controlled, but based on the original company operating processes. DOCIT has discovered that this is a major concern with SMEs. The SMEs cannot afford to completely change the way in which they carry out their business. The solution has to mould around their existing process and information technology (IT) tools, but to also allow for future growth and flexibility of the company. The market for the result is manly manufacturing SMEs who either design or manufacture their own products, or for companies who only manufacture other company's designs as a third party manufacturer (make to print). The key technical issues that have been resolved is the methods that need to be employed at each SME so that a thorough understanding of who is responsible for, and where their design and manufacturing information is used and stored. This applies to both hardcopy and electronic media.
