European multimedia educational software network

Obiettivo

The main objective of the project is to establish a Multimedia Support Network to foster the design, development, diffusion and adaptation of European Multimedia Educational Software (MES). The network addresses the needs of publishers, multimedia developers, content providers and MES users.

The ERMES network will establish and provide a set of commercial services as project results to contribute to specific objectives as follows:
- stimulate the demand for and use of MES by setting up permanent exhibitions and demonstration of multimedia courseware, and by adding a European dimension to awareness activities taking place at the regional or national level;
- facilitate the production of high quality European MES in terms of quality pedagogical design, multilingual and multicultural approach and customisation to different educational frameworks, and by fostering the co-operation between European MES producers in joint development;
- overcome the fragmentation of the European market by promoting trans-national co-operation, and by providing information and consultancy services to overthrow specific barriers hindering the transition to the information society for the publishing companies;
- encourage skills development through training courses for the different actors involved in the target market, to allow multimedia publishers to get access to the necessary skills to become more competitive within the international multimedia business;
- develop and exchange best practices, focusing on MES evaluation, quality assurance and successful business processes and models, relevant to the target markets and closely involving main organisations in the European MES industry.
ERMES will improve the effectiveness of education and training activities and will play a key role in the next future to fulfil the increasing demand for education and training at European level. This is one of the sector which can benefit most for the new information and communication technology. Today, European suppliers of multimedia educational software mainly operate in their local or national markets and their products does not always have the pedagogic value, the true multimedia content and the high degree of interactivity that are required for use in education and training.
To address this situation ERMES will support the co-operation among European suppliers of multimedia educational software, helping them to address the global market and to produce high quality multilingual and multicultural learning packages. In this perspective, one of the impacts of the expected results is that ERMES services will lead to improve the competitiveness of the European suppliers (i.e. educational software producers and publishers), and innovate their work organisation. The results of the project will also be exploited by fostering the use of multimedia educational software at schools, colleges, universities, training centres and companies. Specific attention will be given to create favourable conditions for the development of educational multimedia demand and use in less favoured and peripheral regions of the European Union.
The major action lines of the ERMES project are identified in terms of four classes of services provided by the Consortium, namely:
- User Support Services, to facilitate the introduction and use of multimedia training/education software into real-life learning contexts.
- MES Joint Development and Best Practice, to support distributed and co-operative development of multilingual and multicultural MES.
- Copyright and Distribution Services, to help publishing companies in facing international competition and opening up their market potential. This category of services includes distribution of MES at European level, information services for publishing companies.
- Skills Development Services, to organise various categories of training courses for different skills required by the multimedia education/training market in different European countries, favouring the mobility of students and trainers.
