Ziel
Heavy quark production is intensively studied at present and future elementary particle physics experiment, providing not only a test for perturbative QCD, but also a background to monitor for discovering new-physics processes. Several dedicated experiments were recently commissioned to study bottom-quark production, and the measurement of top-quark production is one of the main objectives of the high energy collision physics program at the Fermilab Tevatron and CERN LHC. At present, the theoretical description of heavy quark production within the framework of perturbative quantum field theory is accurate to about 15 percent, which is insufficient for precision studies. In this project we propose to compute the currently completely unknown second order QCD corrections to heavy quark production at high energy collisions, and to implement them in computer programs which can be used for precise analysis of experimental data.
