Working group in neuroinformatics and computational neuroscience

Obiettivo

The activity of the W.G. will focus on the organisation of some European meetings and on the dissemination of the ideas and tools of Neuroinformatics. Three kinds of meetings will be organised, each aiming at a different audience. The first kind of meeting will gather Neuroscientists and will have the goal of disseminating the ideas, tools and goals of Neuroinformatics within the European Neuroscience community. the second kind of meeting will try to expose European computer scientists to the themes and problems of present Neuroscience, aiming at establishing a useful collaboration between the two communities. The third kind of meeting will be devoted to establish links and possible collaborations between scientists and European companies, related to the topic of Neuroinformatics.

In the last decade Computer and Information Sciences have made a significant impact on all branches of contemporary science and it is now possible to access and to handle a large amount of information, which was not accessible just a few years ago. This has been made possible by the extensive networking and connecting of several hundreds of thousands computers. Also in the last decade the study of parallel information processing in the brain has become one of the central issues in Neuroscience, from which we may expect important breakthroughs. Indeed, research in Information Science is increasingly linked to research in Neuroscience and what is emerging at the interface between the two is a new discipline, Neuroinformatics, which may be defined as the study and understanding of computation, parallel processing and management of information in the brain. As a consequence, Neuroinformatics will also contribute to the understanding of more general complex and highly parallel systems, either artificial or natural. Neuroinformatics is strictly associated to Computational Neuroscience and it may be seen as its recent development. Presently, Neuroinformatics development is concentrated in three specific fields, whose importance is now widely recognised; the first field concerns the development of Neuroscience databases, the second field is primarily devoted to the development of new tools for the acquisition and analysis of different kinds of images of the brain, the third field aims at improving experimental and theoretical tools for the analysis of parallel processing in the brain. Given the recent birth of Neuroinformatics, many different views on its definition can be found and in order to have an effective European perspective, it is necessary to define at a European level the scope and aims of the new discipline and to promote interactions and co-operation among scientists with different backgrounds, information managers and companies so as to strengthen European Neuroinformatics. In order to achieve these goals, a Working Group in Neuroinformatics and Computational Neuroscience is proposed.
