Generalising Robot Manipulation Task

Cognitive Systems and Robotics Teaching the use of functional object classes through learning by doing In order to <span style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold">work naturally</span> in<span style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold"> human environments </span>such as offices and homes, <span style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold">robots of the future</span> will need to be much more <span style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold">flexible</span> and <span style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold">robust</span> in the face of <span style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold">novelty</span> than those of today. <font face="Calibri"><a href="http://www.gert-project.eu/project/project-summary/" target="_blank">GeRT</a> </font>will develop new methods to cope with novelty in <span style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold">manipulation tasks</span>. Humans cope so seamlessly with <span style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold">novel objects</span>, but this kind of everyday novelty in manipulation tasks is hard for a robot. Robots need ways of <span style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold">generalising</span> on the fly to cope with novel objects and novel tasks. To achieve this GeRT will use a variety of techniques from <span style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold">machine perception</span>, <span style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold">machine learning</span>, and <span style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold">artificial intelligence</span> techniques such as <span style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold">automated planning</span>.
