Safety of final storage in geolog. formations; Environmental Research Aspects, 1988-1991

Obiettivo

To carry out the experimental research needed to justify and validate the safety assessment models, particularly on the migration behaviour of risk-dominant radionuclides in deep geological environments. The project is to be carried out in collaboration with the shared-cost action of the CEC programme (DG.XII-D/2).

Progress to end 1990

- competitive interactions of actinides in "colloidal humic acid-mineral oxide" systems have been investigated with polydispersed humic colloids extracted from Boom-clay (CEN/Mol) and gamma-aluminia or amorphous silica.

- kinetic studies of lanthanide interactions with humic substances studied by Time-Resolved Laser-Induced Fluorescence (Radiochimica Acta: in press).

- uranium (VI) carbonate equilibria in groundwaters determined with Laser Thermal Lensing Spectrophotometry, (Talanta-1990: in press).

- transport behaviour of neptunium through granite core samples having various degrees of alteration, investigated in the presence of natural organic matter (Radiochimica Acta-1990: in press).PF ) - joint coordination of the MIRAGE Project (laboratory and in-situ experiments) with DG XII/D-2 shared cost action programme (EC Conference on Radioactive Waste management and Disposal, Luxembourg 1990)

- modular version of the Probabilistic Safety Assessment code LISA completed. The Geosphere Transport Model (GTM), developed to replace the previous THROUGH code, can be used as an independent module to be included in any PSA code. (Participation to the OECD/NEA-PSAC working group).

Detailed description of work foreseen in 1991 (expected results)

- continuation of the studies on basic mechanisms and processes controlling the transport of pollutants in the geosphere:

a) influence on solubility and mobility of inorganic pollutants due to the presence of natural and man-made organics in groundwater

b) model colloids used to investigate mechanical and physico-chemical filtration processes occurring in porous and fractured media.

c) advanced speciation methods, like ICP-MS coupled with liquid chromatography separation techniques explored.

- field validation of laboratory experiments, under controlled environmental conditions, foreseen as contribution to the environmental impact assessment studies concerning the groundwater vulnerability (Radioactive and Chemical Waste programmes)

- analytical chemical support to other activities of the programme developed by other Institutes of the JRC assured.

Short description of evolution of work in 1992

All the above mentioned geochemical studies on environmental behaviour of pollutants, linked with their geological disposal, will be pursued in the next pluriannual programme. The quantification of the geochemical barrier towards the transport of colloidal and complex species is the target of primary importance for the safety assessment of waste disposal.
