CATV networks: demonstration of a new generation of multimedia internet

Obiettivo

Goals of this project are to demonstrate new distributed applications over cable TV networks. It is based on the latest innovations in terms of multimedia servers, INTERNET real-time protocols and compression and decompression techniques.

Bringing high speed communication data links to the home is a key point to provide enhances services with a high level of interactivity like full video on demand, home shopping, teleworking, visioconference or high speed INTERNET access. Although situations may differ from one European country to another, TV cable residential networks relying on technologies such as Hybrid Fibre Coax, Fibre To The Curb, Fibre to The Home or Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Loop have already been largely deployed to support non interactive high quality TV programmes broadcasting.
The availability of these distribution networks is a great opportunity to bring new services down to the home. Indeed, channelization schemes have been reserved in cable data pipes to provide users with a 20 Mbps bandwidth in reception and with roughly a 1 Mbps bandwidth in transmission. This level of performance has to be compared with the few tens of Kbps available on a standard telephone line which so far is the only interaction channel embodied within settop boxes to deliver interactive digital services.
Unfortunately, although regulatory process has been initiated, highly interactive services are still hanged on, waiting for the adequate protocol stacks and server architectures to make full use of this readily available information super-highway.
Thanks to a representative multimedia application, the CATSERVER project aims at demonstrating the capabilities of a global network solution mixing the throughput of the cable network, the improvements of the new generation of INTERNET protocols (including real-time and quality of service features) and the capabilities of the newest software video compression and decompression algorithms. Therefore, distributed applications based on multimedia servers and well suited to a cable network topology are implemented in the project to make full use of the two-ways multimedia capabilities of the network (video, voice, data). In that prospect, the project also develops the required multimedia server architecture (servers installed at information providers' premises).
The targeted demonstration concerns on-line sight-seeing of vacation areas. Besides its stake purpose, this application was chosen for the project because tourism professionals have already explored, through pilot trials, the benefits provided to their customers by INTERNET limited services. Now looking for enhanced multimedia services, travel agencies and tour operators look forward for the CATSERVER experiment which is considered as a key technological core to develop enhanced multimedia servers for their professional applications. Choosing tour programmes or checking hotels locations thanks to videotransmission instead of paper brochures, booking journeys interactively at home, avoiding misunderstandings between agencies and customers, are some examples of these near-future services made possible owing to the CATSERVER architecture.
However, beyond this business to business, the technology developed by CATSERVER can be used to enhance a wide range of multimedia applications. Moreover, it concerns the professional market as well as the consumer market. Therefore, the project intends to liaise with other European projects that could either bring complementary technology or that could make use of CATSERVER capabilities for their own multimedia applications.
